What’s Goin’ On?

I was in a rehearsal with the band at the time, and we were rehearsing some of my originals and we began a conversation about playing cover songs. The first song we played through was one that of course needed no introduction as I played the introduction and immediately they knew the song…. ‘My Girl,’ which was made popular by the Temptations. We rehearsed it a few times and got a really good sound going and after playing it about the third time, Tucker, the bass player said “We could play Motown all day.” That was when I played the opening piano part to ‘I’ll be there’ by the Jackson 5. We played through it and afterward began to excitedly talk about the other Motown artists we could play. I mentioned Stevie Wonder and how I wanted to play ‘Sir Duke,’ ‘Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thang.’ After playing a few bars of the Stevie Wonder tunes I looked up from the keyboard and said “I want to run something by you guys. This might be a bit of a stretch, but I’ve been working on a mash up.” They both looked at me inquisitively so I began to explain. “So I know ya’ll (that’s how southerners talk) know ‘What’s Goin’ On’ by Marvin Gaye right?” They shook their heads energetically and I said okay cool, well in the 90’s there was this band called 4 Non Blondes who wrote a song called ‘What’s Up,’ where the tag line for the song is “What’s Goin’ On.” The drummer, who has since moved on said “Well don’t just stand there, how does it go?” So I pulled out my phone and found it and played it for him. We spent the next few hours working on fitting the two together. I’ll just say this, its not as easy as T.V. shows would have you believe. Anywho, it came out great! It’s not for sale anywhere, but I want to give you a free download of What’s Goin’ On2 just for hangin’ with me. Enjoy! It’s just my way of saying thank you for your support. Have a good one!
